Ultrasonography of the right inguinal region shows a defect in the inguinal wall with herniation of the appendix, small bowel loops, and omental fat. Mild periappendiceal fat stranding is noted. The hernial contents extend into the scrotal sac.

Amyand's hernia is named after Claudius Amyand, who, performed the first successful appendectomy during the treatment of an 11-year-old boy who presented with a right inguinal hernia.
