Warthin's tumour is named after Aldred Scott Warthin (1866–1931), an American pathologist at the University of Michigan who published a report on this specific type of benign parotid gland tumor in 1929. While often associated with Warthin, the tumor was first described earlier, in 1895, by Hildebrand . The term "Warthin's tumor" was proposed by Martin and Ehrlich in 1944 to honor Warthin's initial detailed study of the tumor.
