Contrast enhanced CT scan of the neck and thorax shows bifurcation of the ascending aorta into two aortic arches surrounding the trachea and esophagus and uniting posteriorly to form the descending aorta. The right subclavian and right common carotid arteries arise from the right sided arch; the left subclavian and the left common carotid arteries from the left sided arch.
