A 45-year-old woman was brought to the emergency department with altered sensorium. A Foley catheter inserted by an intern drained no urine, An ultrasonogram was performed.
Ultrasonography of the abdomen and pelvis shows the inflated bulb of the Foley’s catheter in the endometrial cavity. The urinary bladder is partially distended.
The Foley catheter is named after its inventor, American surgeon Frederic Eugene Basil Foley. He designed and developed the inflatable balloon catheter in the 1930s while working in Boston and St. Paul, Minnesota.
