A five-year-old boy was brought by his parents with a swelling in the left lumbar region since two years
Contrast enhanced CT scan of the abdomen shows a well-defined, heterogeneously enhancing lesion measuring 7.2×9.2x11.2 cms arising from the interpolar region of the left kidney with areas of necrosis or cystic changes. The left renal vein is compressed by the mass. The infrarenal IVC is pushed to the right. The tumor abuts the left renal pelvis - however the pelvicalyceal system is undilated.
Named after the German surgeon Max Wilms, who first described the condition in 1899 in his work titled "Die Mischgeschwülste Der Niere" (The Mixed Tumors of the Kidney).
