The frontal radiograph of the wrist joints shows shortening of the ulnar aspect of the distal end of the left radius causing positive ulnar variance. There is proximal migration of the carpal bones. MRI demonstrates volar and ulnar tilt of the distal radial articular surface with relative shortening of the radius compared to the ulna. There is ‘V’ shaped arrangement of the proximal carpal bones.
Madelung deformity is named after the German surgeon Otto Wilhelm Madelung, who in 1878 provided the first detailed, comprehensive description of the condition and its characteristics. Though he was not the first to observe the deformity, his significant clinical report in 1878 established his name in connection with this condition.
