A 23 year old woman was brought to the emergency department after a brief period of admission in another hospital. There was an alleged history of accidental intravenous injection of mercury during the prior admission.
Frontal and lateral radiographs show linear branching opacities of metallic density in both lungs, predominantly in the mid and lower zones. The large airways are normal. There is no air-space opacification. Plain CT scan of the chest confirms these findings. Metallic artefacts are seen partially obscuring the lungs.
