Ewing sarcoma is named after Dr. James Ewing, who first described the cancerous bone tumor in the 1920s. Ewing noticed that the cells of Ewing sarcoma looked different from other bone tumors under a microscope, and that this type of tumor was more likely to respond to radiation therapy.
