Meckel's diverticulum is named after Johann Friedrich Meckel (1781–1833), a 19th century German anatomist who first described its embryology in 1809. Meckel was a professor at the University of Halle in Central Germany and his work anticipated Darwin's concepts in comparative anatomy, embryology, and teratology.
