A Thornwaldt cyst is named after the German physician Gustav Ludwig Thornwaldt, who established it as a pathological entity in 1885 after describing a series of nasopharyngeal cysts and their treatments. Although the cyst was previously discovered by Mayer in 1840, Thornwaldt's 1885 work was instrumental in its recognition as a distinct clinical condition.
