The frontal chest radiograph shows a well-defined soft tissue opacity in the right lower zone. It obscures the right dome of diaphragm and the right cardiophrenic angle. There are no calcifications or lucencies in the lesion.
The contrast enhanced CT scan of the chest shows a defect in the anteromedial part of the right dome of the diaphragm with herniation of the omentum into the right hemithorax. There is mild omental fat stranding and small amounts of free fluid in the hernial sac.
Morgagni hernia is named after Giovanni Battista Morgagni, an Italian anatomist and pathologist. He first described this type of hernia in 1761 in his book, "De Sedibus et Causis Morborum per Anatomen Indagatis".
