A 16 year old girl came with a painless wound over the left great toe since six months. One year ago, she had been diagnosed to have Hansen’s disease.
There is sclerotic fragmentation of the proximal phalanx of the great toe and destruction of the interphalangeal joint interspersed with bony fragments and areas of sclerosis. There is tapering resorption of the fragments.
The microorganism responsible foe Hansen's disease was discovered by Dr. Gerhard Armauer Hansen in 1874, a Norwegian physician who was searching for the unknown bacteria in the skin nodules of lepers.
